Bicycle Portraits
Portland has a huge community of hand-built bike builders, many of whom are world renowned, building custom bikes for people all over the world. I started shooting some stuff for Jordan Hufnagel last year, and since then a few of his cohorts have hit me up for shots of their bikes when they’re completed. Two weeks ago there were 8 or 9 bikes in the office over the course of the week, as the guys had all just returned from a hand-built show in the mid-west. Before the bikes were sent to the owners, they got photographed in the studio.
I like bikes, and I like building things, so these bikes are fun to shoot. The details on each bike are totally different, so shooting them is almost like shooting portraits of people. Here are a few shots from last weeks shoots. The bikes are by Hufnagel, Courage, and Argonaut. If you’re in the market for a custom bicycle, definitely check those guys out. Quality stuff.

Thomas added this brilliant insight on Jul 25 09 at 4:59 pmHey,
excelent photography !
I have just built a bike frame in university. I´m going to take some photos next week. We have access to a photo studio there and I was wandering how you make the bike apear by itslef, as if there was nothing making it stand there. I was thinking fishing line a remove anything that appears with photoshop… i don´t know…any help will be greatly appreciated.
cheers
Thomas
Jared added this brilliant insight on Jul 26 09 at 7:39 pmYou could use fishing line, but it can be a pain in the ass.
I have a white box, and a clear flower vase that sized to fit under the bottom bracket. Then they just get taken out in post production. A lot of it dissapears anyway depending on how it’s lit, and then it just requires a little clean up to get rid of it. Pretty simple.
Thomas added this brilliant insight on Jul 27 09 at 12:09 amthat sounds a lot easier. Thanks
