Welcome to the Jungle
I’ve known Mark Rainha for a long time. We both grew up riding in Massachusetts, and somehow both ended up in Portland. When I first moved here, Mark lived on a house boat. Today he lives in a spot that can only be described as an obscure jungle cabin surrounded by multi-million dollar homes (His neighbors include Portland Trailblazer Greg Oden). It’s amazing, totally hidden, and has an awesome view of the city. This photo was shot on his new jungle ramp. Even though I know where it is, I can still barely find it. A short jaunt through a Where the Wild Things Are-like tunnel surrounded by vines and up stairs carved from dirt, and your there. I helped him lug stuff up to build it the other day, and it was no easy task. Almost all of it was built from re-purposed wood. There are Tarzan vines surrounding the ramp, and you could easily plummet to your death off a cliff if you fall off the back. In other words, it’s pretty awesome. This was the first session on the ramp, which is mostly done, aside from coping and a small deck on the side he’s airing. There are lots of potential good photos to be taken on this thing. Spots like this — a little bit sketchy, and a little bit mysterious — are my favorite to ride.
