From the Archives: Gary Young, 2002.
This shot of Gary Young is from a road trip in 2002 that I took with Aaron Nardi, Ryan Sher, and Gary. We drove from SoCal to Chicago for a contest, hitting some street spots and parks along the way. We stopped in Las Vegas for at least a day to ride some of the many skateparks, and since it was mid-summer, you can imagine it was hot. There’s a photo I took of a thermometer on this slide sheet that registers 113-degrees. Skateparks are like giant reflectors with all the concrete, so it made it feel even hotter. This shot was a two page spread in Ride UK, and a similar one was used on a pull-out poster in the same issue. Later in the trip, Gary lost his wallet, and used a bio from another magazine he had in his car as picture ID at the bank. He’s the only person I know that’s used a magazine feature to take money out of their bank account. A few weeks later, Gary went back to a gas station in Utah where he thought he might have left the wallet. They still had it. How he found that gas station again I have no idea.
