I’ve been doing design work for Woodward Camp since 2006-ish. I do the catalogs every year, as well as a lot of the advertising, collateral, shirts, etc. They’re growing constantly, even expanding internationally, and there’s always something new going on, so it’s fun stuff. We work with a number of different brands in our office, both big and small, but Woodward is one of the most consistent. This year’s print and web look started with a sheet of steel in my garage, a few stencils, and some muriatic acid. The resulting rusty steel textures got used as subtle elements in the catalogs this year, but they take on more of a roll in the ads. Essentially, I quick-rusted the area around the stencil with the acid and water, then shot photos of the result to use in the designs. The textures got worked in with some provided action photography (I shot the BMX ad of Morgan Wade) and we were off and running. We also worked QR codes into the print campaign this year, to direct readers to the various Woodward web portals by simply scanning them with their smart phone. See the ads after the jump.

Woodward did a larger online marketing push this year than in previous years. We used the tagline “Come Ride With Us” and “Come Skate With Us” throughout the online campaign. Here’s a small sampling of those ads, which are currently running in a number of sizes and iterations.

Just got the last of these back from the printer. This is much of September and October around the studio. This is the fifth year in a row we’ve produced the catalogs for Woodward Camp, the largest Action Sports, Gymnastics and Cheer summer camps/training facilities in the world. This year it was five catalogs in total (three for Woodward in PA, two for Woodward West). We’re designing for a broad, young audience on these — about 7-17 years of age. It’s a relatively quick turnaround for the scope of the project (five forty-page catalogs in two months), but the quick pace and deadlines keep things fun. I’m down at Woodward West for the week shooting photos. Yesterday was the Media Day / Opening of the new Mega Ramp down here, and as expected it’s, well, mega. A bunch of mega-shredders came into town for the day to ride it, and while all survived the day, Elliot Sloan and Marcello Bastos went down really, really hard on the quarter. Hopefully they’re beginning the healing process as we speak. There are a few more photos after the jump, including some skate shots of Bob Burnquist and Jake Brown. Yesterday afternoon I went up to the outskirts of Mt. Hood to film the skateboard portion of Bonfire Snowboarding’s annual Pipe to Pipe contest for YoBeat. The one-day event features a snowboard contest at the mountain followed by a skate contest at Windell’s Camp. This year, with the concrete park at Windell’s growing, and the weather as good as it can be, the contest was held outside (it’s been inside the park building for the last few years). The above video is some of what went down — mostly in the Pro division — during the skate contest. For full photos and coverage of both the snow and skate events check out YoBeat.

I took a road trip down to California for Woodward West’s Spring Camp, and next weekend’s Old School BMX gathering. Before everyone left Spring Camp this morning, I did a vert shoot with Neal Hendrix. We got a few cool shots using a small ladder for a slightly different perspective. Also after the jump is a shot of Tyler Goulden lit with some movie lights late yesterday night (Woodward video master Dave Metty was filming and I poached a few shots). Update: just added a quick video clip of David Loy after the jump as well.

Neal and I got a few Eggplant photos that I like, but this one I like as a happy accident. You can see my feet on the ladder as well through the power of the fisheye lens, along with the shadow of me on the ladder cast by the flash. A few rules broken, but those rule breaks are my favorite parts of the shot.

Shot a street spot with Ben Graham tonight near my house in SE Portland. Originally he just planned to 50/50 the horizontal support of this fence out of a small bank below, but after he got that done he figured he’d move on to try and nosepick it. When we were down to our last slivers of light he managed to land it clean. Upon finishing the shoot Ben said “You better blog this.”

The 2009 Oregon Trifecta was this past weekend. The Trifecta is (supposed to be) a three day skateboard contest at three different concrete skateparks in Oregon. Unfortunately, this year a mishap caused the first stop in Lincoln City to be cancelled, so the Trifecta was Bifecta. I made the above video for BFD.com, where you can also find coverage. The above video is an edit I made for BFD.com from the skate portion of Bonfire’s Pipe to Pipe Contest at Windells Snowboard Camp last weekend. Steve Reeves won, for the second time in a row.

Portland has so many mini ramps it’s silly. Most of them are really, really small, often small enough to fit in a garage providing a rainy season skate spot. But the backyard mini selection is still pretty strong. I shot a few photos yesterday at two different in-town ramps, one of which is the Dude Barn ramp which you’ve seen on here before.
